Every year you look forward to seeing debut builds and cutting-edge technology in our industry on display for a week in Las Vegas during the annual Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show. Better known as SEMA, the wild builds seem to overshadow the event's actual purpose of putting industry buyers and sellers in the same place, at the same time, in order to help generate more business and industry progression.
The event is the Las Vegas Convention Center's largest gathering and mixed in with the hype and disdain that comes from individuals and shops unveiling their works of art for you to admire or tear apart on social media, there are thousands of new products being unveiled, a handful of which fall within our community.
Just about every year, there's a specific vehicle that manufacturers focus on and in turn it becomes the "year of the *insert vehicle here* at SEMA." A few years ago it was the Civic Type R and this year, not surprisingly, it's the Toyota Supra. Go ahead, make your "nice Z, bro" comments, but whether you're open minded or immediately hate anything from Toyota that isn't armed with the iconic 2JZ from the factory (I heard there were actually Supra models produced before the MkIV, but haven't confirmed it), the new Supra is very important to our industry in that it creates interest, increased parts development and production, and in turn, more dollars to keep it afloat.
Strolling through over 1 million net square feet of Las Vegas carpet, we stopped by dozens of booths to see what new parts will be hitting our market in the very near future - and yes, quite a few of them are related to the A90.
GReddy - @greddyperformance
GReddy landed in a new spot at this year's event and brought with them one of the best examples of the new Supra with their drift-ready build. Armed with the popular Pandem kit on the outside, the B58 engine now features a BorgWarner EFR 7163G turbo upgrade and GReddy's exhaust and intake manifolds - the latter of which was also on the new parts display rack.
An absolutely stunning piece but be warned - this isn't a simple bolt-on affair, as it's race-specific and requires removal of some amenities, like the factory heater function.
This updated version of their 370Z complete twin turbo kit was also in the booth.
Other new items included fully prepped heads with cnc portwork and upgraded valvetrains that GReddy will soon be offering for popular applications like the 2JZ, RB26, various Honda engines and more. It's a bold move for the aftermarket staple that seems to be making huge strides with products we never would have expected but we're happy to see them on the way.
SPEC Clutch - @specclutch
For those lucky enough to own Honda's original flagship, the NA1 NSX, SPEC Clutch has the perfect solution for putting big power to the ground. Designed to support builds making over 500lbs-ft of torque, the billet Super Twin clutch and flywheel includes a bolt-in billet master cylinder upgrade and concentric release bearing and the most aggressive version will hold upwards of 1,150lbs-ft of torque!
Konig Wheels - @konigwheelsusa
Konig brought in Motion Auto TV's Trevor Jameson and his now famous MkIV Supra after Jameson put together a 10min recap video of his entire build that's netted almost 13 million views thus far.
The fan favorite made its way to Vegas alongside a bright yellow A90, both perched on Konig's new Hypergram wheel model finish - Dark Metallic Graphite with a mirror machined lip.
The color combo and wheel style works perfectly on both generation Supras and the idea of staging them next to one another certainly made an impact during the week.
On the display rack was their new Countergram model shown here with a Hyper Chrome center and in Matte Black with a machined lip. Both styles will be available in 15-, 17-, 18-, and 19-inch versions in various widths and offsets.
Konig's Hexaform wheel spotted in Matte Bronze and Matte black finishes were also on hand. Sizing will include 15-, 17- and 18-inch options, again in various widths and offsets to suit your needs.
Chase Bays - @chasebays
Chase Bays has teamed up with Hoonigan on a few different projects and now the two are collaborating for this awesome modular Hydro Handbrake kit. Chase Bays has offered their Hydro Handbrake for quite some time and the redesign required both groups to really do their homework to come up with something that's as unique and functional as it is stylish.
Eibach - @eibach_world
Always one of the very first to offer suspension upgrades, Eibach displayed their A90 Supra PRO-PLUS kit comprised of matched performance springs and front/rear sway bars that the group explains will dramatically improve handling and enhance cornering with precise turn-in and the comfortable ride quality that Eibach is well known for.
Wheel spacers in various sizes for both lug and bolt-style wheel set ups have always been available through Eibach but they mentioned even more applications and the choice of black or silver, giving you the option to pick whatever color works best for your wheel color.
This 2002 stood front and center at the Eibach booth and even had a tough-to-get Hot Wheels version that was handed out to some lucky fans throughout the week after they waited in line for their chance to snag one.
JE Pistons - @jepistons
Subaru FA20/Toyota 4U-GSE owners have a new option for engine building with JE Pistons' Ultra Series off-the-shelf pistons that include Grain Flow Optimized Forging that offers greater strength in critical areas and will allow you to really bring on the boost!
Wilwood - @wilwooddiscbrakes
The brake gurus at Wilwood have addressed something you probably never even thought would need addressing: electric parking brakes. With most new cars now using a switch rather than a good 'ol tug on the parking brake arm, Wilwood has developed their version.
Though it's displayed using a Mustang system, the idea is the same for most vehicles and this can serve as a direct replacement or can modernize an older build. Building something with a mechanical e-brake? No problem, Wilwood has their own switch and it's not some flimsy plastic piece, it's incredibly solid and even illuminates.
Something mentioned by a well-known builder during the week is just how slick it would be to hide this switch out of sight in order to act as another layer of theft protection. Going to be tough to drive away in a car with over 2,000lbs of clamping force locking up the rear wheels.
Hondata - @hondata_inc
You know Hondata for making some of the best Honda engine tuning solutions around but they've also been hard at work developing a complete fuel system for the FK8 Type R. When we say complete, we mean it, as the kit will include high flow injectors, low and high pressure fuel lines, direct injection pump, ethanol rated in-tank low pressure pump, and, of course, the Hondata software to make it all work.
Hondata tells us the system will deliver 25-30 percent more fuel flow compared to the stock system and is a plug-and-play affair, complete reversible. The group has been testing their system for over a year and they expect the kits to be available in January.
To kick off the announcement, Hondata's booth featured a pair of Type Rs on display. The white version sporting Spoon Sport's new FK8 front bumper and the yellow one fitted with @27won's new front mount intercooler kit.
Moton has made a name for itself by offering extremely high-quality suspension goods intended for competition use but in most cases, more than capable of being used on the street.
For the BMW crowd, this Moton 2-way internal system for the F8X M3/M4 front uses the group's latest technology and doesn't require a remove reservoir. 12-point compression and rebound control and adjustable gas pressure is on board for one serious set of coilovers.
Right next to that is the group's 1-way MX-5 ND Miata offering with 15-click rebound control and again, no reservoirs needed. A large main piston grants ultra-quick response and there are no preloaded valve stacks required to dial in low-speed damping control.
The Supra in their booth was fitted with Moton's A90 application and with the hatch opened up, you can spot the Moton reservoirs mounted and ready for action. We expect to see this car at Super Lap Battle this year.
Along with various coilovers on display, in the new products section of the show AST also unveiled their Veloster N top mount with adjustable camber. Able to be used with factory springs or AST lowering springs, users can add or remove up to 2-degrees of camber adjustment and the units are produced using the same high-quality aluminum used on their adjustable dampers.
Yokohama Tire - @yokohamatire
Getting the nod from SEMA for their Apex tire offering, Yokohama's latest was intended for the North American market and is available in 17- to 20-inch fitment for all types of sportscars and high-end, performance-minded offerings whether foreign or domestic and carries a 25,000 mile limited tread warranty on non-staggered set ups.
