This week the 2021 model Honda Civic Type R makes its return and begins landing on dealership doorsteps. Since its initial release back in 2016, the FK8 made a huge impact on the industry, marked the first Civic Type R to ever arrive in the U.S. and led the charge of the 10th generation Civic family, which is the first ever turbocharged Civic line to be made available stateside.

Along with the introduction of the Type R came negativity surrounding various dealerships that placed a measurable tax on the limited offering which in turn saw its mid-30K pricing pushed well above the 40K mark in some cases. For the 2021 model, Honda has announced pricing at $37,495—a slight increase from the 2020 model. With the CTR fully established and a few years under its belt, the price hikes put in place by dealers may not be as prevalent with the incoming models...at least with the standard version Type R.

Along with the '21 model comes the Limited Edition Civic Type R—a vehicle we broke the news on back in February when we were invited to Milan, Italy, for the unveil. Expected to arrive later this month, it will be draped in Phoenix Yellow with a black roof and side mirrors, a color combo exclusive to the Limited Edition model. Fitted with BBS forged alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Cup 2 tires, the new forged rolling stock helps shed unsprung weight and coincides with an overall reduction in weight by deleting select areas of sound deadening, rear heater ducts, cargo cover and rear wiper motor—the sum of which is 46 lbs. lighter than the standard R model.

Adjustments to the Active Damper System suspension were made and are reported to sample inputs 10x quicker than before, while the electronic power steering has been calibrated to keep pace and improve the overall feel from behind the wheel. Power output remains the same between both the standard and Limited Type Rs. The lighter curb weight and exclusive features come at a cost, of course, with the Limited Edition CTR listed at 43,995, and just 600 models slated for production.

The 2020 Type R received some minor updates and many of those will carry over to both the standard and Limited Type Rs, most notably, the larger grille opening and radiator. With some complaints of overheating issues on track, Honda addressed concerns by improving the 5-door's cooling system. Inside the cabin, the Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel returns as does the weighted shift knob. Also on board are a bevy of Honda-branded sensing technologies that include their Forward Collision Warning, Road Departure Mitigation with Lane Departure Warning and other safety features as part of a package that is attached not only to Honda's golden child Civic, but to other vehicles in the line-up.

The special version of the already highly-touted Type R is carrying some momentum, having set a new front-wheel drive record on Suzuka Circuit with 2-minutes 23.993-sec in Euro-spec trim. Back in 2017, the original FK8 set a new standard for production front wheel drive cars on the Nurburgring at 7-minutes 43.80-sec. The high visibility accomplishments only help bolster the Type Rs presence worldwide and in the enthusiast circle, the Civic Type R has quickly become a favorite among the tuning crowd with a burgeoning aftermarket and a presence at local track events and community gatherings that has continued to grow.
