Toyota Gazoo Racing GT500 2020 Supra Unveiled

Carbon-fiber, aeroed-up, widebody A90 will contest Super GT’s GT500 group in the first year of Class One DTM crossover

In January, Toyota Gazoo Racing teased the Supra's return to Japan's premier Super GT touring car championship from the Tokyo Auto Salon with an aeroed-up, widebody concept car based on the just-revealed A90, the Mark V of the storied sports car nameplate. It was part of a hype operation gone amuck for the new Toyota product at the time, but we were down to see what the thing could do, considering the last time Toyota contested Super GT with a Supra it won its last season out. Fast forward eight months, and at a press conference at Suzuka Speedway this week showing off base entries from Super GT's three works teams in the upper tier GT500 Class, TGR finally pulled back the shroud on its low, wide, carbon-fiber bodied A90 competition machine.

The translation from concept to reality gets thumbs way up from us. While very few details have been released about the car at this point apart from the images shared by the team and series, we can see what it rocks, and deduce from the rules what its spec will be. Built for the 2020 championship, the TGR Supra will have its debut season amid the rollout of the new Class One touring car era, which for the first time joins the teams of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) with those of Super GT for select joint races. This means the Supra will sport a 2-liter turbo inline-4 in Super GT trim, and at points during the year will face Audi and BMW challengers.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s the Supra was one of the core platforms in the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC) but was replaced by the Lexus SC 430 in 2006, three years after the Supra went out of production. The SC 430 era lasted some seven seasons before it was succeeded by the RC F in 2014. Supra's return marks a homecoming, but also the final stretch in Super GT for the Lexus brand and its successful LC 500, which made its debut three years ago and took Nick Cassidy and Ryo Hirakawa to a 2017 title. For Super GT, the Supra will share the 2020 GT500 grid with an upgraded version of the Nissan R35 GT-R and a front-engine version of the current Honda NSX.

From the Editors of SS: Well, well, well, what do we have here? Our Monday morning became a whole lot more interesting waking up to the announcement of a new V-8 Lexus IS, the IS 500 F Sport Performance – but do not call it an IS F. While it uses the same 2UR-GSE mill

As a color choice, we don’t generally see a lot of turquoise on tuner cars; it seems to be a hue favored more by bejeweled sun-loving grandmas with leathery skin rather than Japanese car fans. But the dazzling sheen on Jimmy Tu’s Chrome Turquoise 2015 Nissan GT-R is kind of mesmerizing and possibly the perfect

Cars like this 1996 Civic Type R EK9 are commonly found among the most desired by Honda fans old and young. Sure, it doesn’t carry the dramatic appeal of, say, the original NSX – a car that carries a legion of fans not only enamored with Hondas but car enthusiasts of all types – and

Super Street: It didn’t even make any sense back in 1999 when Honda announced that its S2000 was on its way to dealerships. Knee-deep in all things Honda during an era when the 5th gen. Civic, a monumental hit for Honda’s aftermarket hungry fans was just being followed up by the 6th generation Civic –

From the Editors at SS: It may be from the ‘80s, and never offered in America, and look a little goofy with its ride height hiked up the way it is, but all of that belies the sports car athlete that is the midengined, turbo four-banger, AWD RS200. Made so Ford could go rally racing
