Top 5 Most Popular Honda CRX Feature Cars

Running down the most popular CRX feature cars of all time based on YOUR views.

You can argue back and forth about what generation Civic reigns supreme in the affordable, mod-friendly hatchback segment but rarely do you find someone not smitten with Honda's two-seater portion of the family, which leads to our Top 5 CRX features of all time.

Short-lived with just two generations (three if you count the non-U.S. version of the del Sol which continued to carry the name but no one ever relates the two) that spanned an eight-year run, it was one of those vehicles that not only helped to spark a wildfire of custom Honda build enthusiasm worldwide, but transcended to legendary status.

Today they're as tough to find in decent condition as you'd expect any 30-plus-year-old economy commuter car to be, and if you are lucky enough to find one in solid condition, OEM parts are either non-existent or priced like a brand new pair of Supreme brand salad tongs, i.e. overpriced to the point of being almost comical. Nevertheless, there are still a pretty good amount of builds and rebuilds floating around and we've featured plenty, the most popular of which can be found below.

*Top 5 list is based on metrics - determined by the largest number of article views by you, the viewer.

  • Richard Martinez's 1992 CRX HF - Modernizing Honda's 2-Seater
  • George Ferreira's 1991 CRX Si - Restomod Classic
  • Ryan Weddig's 1985 CRX - Mugen B16B-Powered 1st Gen.
  • Aaron Weir's 1989 CRX Si - Converting to Rear-Wheel-Drive
  • Wayne Denman's 1988 CRX HF - B20/VTEC Legacy Build

Richard Martinez's 1992 CRX HF - Modernizing Honda's 2-Seater

Original feature from 2018: HERE
Forget period correct details and underpowered engines of the past, this HF model (the lightest option Honda produced) has been modernized with a 2.4L K-series that's been fitted with a Borg Warner S257SX-E turbo that helps pump out over 400hp.

Some like speed while others like appearance, but in this case it's an all-of-the-above affair with a complete Spruce Mica Green color change and a JDM front-end conversion. If you look closely you might even be able to spot the wider front fenders that blend in nicely with the factory lines.

George Ferreira's 1991 CRX Si - Restomod Classic

Original feature from 2019: HERE
If you like preserving the original while adding a few "extras" for a timeless OEM+ build, then this Si is for you. Powered by a JDM GS-R swap and hydro trans conversion, the engine bay isn't the shaved and tucked specimen you're used to seeing and retains many of the original parts and layout that you might find if Honda had ever offered a 1.8L version of the 2-seater.

A complete restoration with all new trim and moldings laid over fresh paint also included a JDM front-end conversion. A set of Mugen M7s are perfect fit to the refreshed exterior, while inside you'll find a mix of pristine OEM parts and carefully chosen aftermarket goods.

Ryan Weddig's 1985 CRX - Mugen B16B-Powered 1st Gen.

Original feature from Feb: HERE
You probably didn't expect to see a first-gen. CRX on this list, given how much more popular the '88-to-'91 version is, but this mid-'80s example is one in a million. Powered by an authentic Mugen N1-spec Civic Type R engine with an ITR transmission, the suspension was addressed with Heel-Toe Auto's Medieval Pro V1 coilovers and Mugen torsion bars to help keep pace with the newfound power.

More than just a swap, the exterior is in time capsule-kept condition and includes an impossible to get Mugen aero kit. Step inside and the first thing you'll notice are the vintage two-tone Recaro LT-L seats. To get a real idea of how long the process was to secure these rare gems, take a look at the story behind Ryan's long-term build-up—it's worth it.

Aaron Weir's 1989 CRX Si - Converting to Rear-Wheel-Drive

Original story from 2016: HERE
You've seen every possible Honda swap under the hood of countless CRX builds but you probably haven't seen too many S2000 swaps and in rear-wheel-drive configuration, like Aaron Weir's creation.

That's right, an AP2 F22C was mounted in its native position in his CRX bay and boosted with a Garrett GT35R. Out back you'll find a Nissan S14 rear subframe underneath while inside the hatch area, a cantilever suspension setup is utilized. With almost all of the work done with his own two hands, Weir created an incredible, functional RWD CRX that stands on its own as one of the most unique builds we've ever encountered.

Top CRX Features Wayne Denman CRX HF 01 Photo 16/16   |   Top 5 Most Popular Honda CRX Feature Cars

Wayne Denman's 1988 CRX HF - B20/VTEC Legacy Build

Original feature: HERE
If you're a longtime Honda enthusiast, then you certainly remember the impact that Hawaii's Honda builders had on the internet in the early 2000s. At a time when forums and print magazines were the main source of information sharing, the Endless Garage crew was churning out some amazing track and show-worthy builds, one of which was a mocha-colored CRX.

Complete with a built B20/VTEC, Mugen-style kit and a bare bones interior with custom cage, he'd crashed the car only to rebuild it and enjoy until 2006, when the island lost its local motorsports track and Denman made his way to Oregon where he took an extended break from cars entirely. When a friend in Hawaii offered to ship his old engine and a number of his original parts to the mainland, Denman found another CRX HF and spent two years piecing it together in his secluded, one-car garage for the perfect comeback build.
