Top Gear Tuesday - Catching the Drift

Top Gear gets a visit from Japan in the form of a D1GP trio

As great as the Top Gear series has always been about taking you along for a ride behind the wheel of high-performance cars and exotics and, in one way or another, putting them into always entertaining situations, having the crew bring in some "ringers" from our community is always fun to see. In Season 6, Episode 11, three D1 Grand Prix drift pros made their way to the infamous Top Gear proving grounds and put on a show.

The episode brings in the D1 drivers but is focused on a vehicle you might not be completely familiar with in the Vauxhall Monaro VXR. Holden's V8-powered, rear wheel drive coupe (third generation known in the states as the Pontiac GTO) is a favorite of the Top Gear crew for its natural ability to be tossed into a full-blown drift sweep without hesitation.

Cue the drifting expert, Yasuyuki Kazama, who takes a shot behind the wheel of the Monaro and does work, blasting huge drifts and completely upstages Richard Hammond - though, in all honesty, that's exactly what you would expect given Kazama's resume.

Also in that episode, Hammond jumps into a Lamborghini Murcielago roadster in Spain and while he's there piloting the bull, he decides to try running with multiple bulls! In addition, Clarkson gives his take on the Ford F150 of that era but, before you say you don't care a bit, it is in fact the SVT Lightning, which is far more worth an in-depth look compared an average Ford pick-up.
